The co-creation of Batenburg Bright Bin

A ship-to-line system which changed inventory management of fastener materials in OEM industries

For upholding efficient workflows in OEM businesses, nothing is more time consuming than managing your inventory and keeping the stream of materials as cost and space efficient as possible. Especially in product manufacturing, installation, and servicing activities, where the right materials and spare parts are required at a moment notice.

Although fastening components might not be the first category that comes in mind in relation to this scenario, these items are recurring ingredients on the bill of materials for many equipment manufacturers and service technicians.

As multiple companies under the coordination of Batenburg Techniek have a wide footprint in the installation and manufacturing industry, noticing and acting on this challenge was more than logical. With its focus on supplying the industry with industrial grade fastening materials, Batenburg Bevestigingstechniek became the driving force behind the realization of Bright Bin: a wireless inventory management system for fastening materials.

With this ship-to-line concept, Batenburg Bevestigingstechniek automatically receives updates about low running stock levels and arranges a shipment to resupply the assigned location, in most cases a warehouse or manufacturing facility. The setup lets your employees work with fewer inventory actions, no unnecessary administration, and faster turnaround times.

Setting up an automatic workflow between a stock holding manufacturer and end user required more than a service agreement on paper. The hardware and software needed to facilitate the inventory and ordering process had to be designed, tested and optimized. The required solutions were found at Batenburg Applied Technologies and Batenburg Bellt. Both are affiliated companies with an extensive knowledge about automation and solutions for digitalization.

Co-create a system like Bright Bin 2.0?

The ideal route to construct a custom inventory system

The ideal route to construct a custom inventory system

The first market ready Bright Bin started as a simple inventory scanning solution, with a straightforward boxlike enclosure housing the barcode scanner, related hardware and server communicating software. The new 2.0 version is a significant improvement to the previous model, now facilitating a touch display, further optimized hardware, and a sleeker design.

Selecting and assembling the hardware was again done by engineers of Batenburg Applied Technologies, as they are familiar with setting up the ideal pathway for the production of custom IPCs. Their extensive knowledge in the field of electronic components and system enclosure design quickly resulted in a digital mockup of the system to polish further. After a couple of reviews, prototyping began and a production ready design was accomplished short after.

On the other side, software engineers of Batenburg Bellt collaborated in this process and held close ties with the involved engineering teams of Batenburg Applied Technologies and Batenburg Bevestigingstechniek. Compatibility with the new hardware and a user friendly interface where key. The result is an inventory software package that runs smoothly on a platform that requires minimum resources and battery power.
