EDT UI2 industrial grade displays

How EDT UI2 displays simplify your in-design process for industrial grade HMI

Industrial grade displays for Human-Machine Interfaces are used in various types of applications and environments. Unlike commercial panels, these displays must be able to operate for a longer period, even in harsh conditions with fluctuating temperatures. This requires a versatile and reliable display panel, whether used in portable, medical or industrial areas. With EDT's new series of UI2 displays, Batenburg Applied Technologies offers machine and equipment builders a high-performance solution for these challenges.

EDT used their experience in the LCD/TFT sector to combine the best features of a display in the new UI2 product line. The series currently consists of four display sizes with their own resolution and display ratio, all using IPS technology and an integrated backlight driver. This ensures excellent readability from every angle. All displays use the simplified design, the same thought-out interface, and an optional capacitive touch module.

Versatile and bright industrial IPS displays

The UI2 displays with capacitive touch are equipped with a high-quality touch component, outfitted with a 6-pin I²C-bus and a 2 millimeter thick, chemically hardened overhanging and black-printed cover lens. This makes it easier to implement the display in small production series. Customized lens designs are available for larger production series, starting at one thousand units per module size.

The touch displays can reach a maximum brightness of 800 nits. For the non-touch models this goes up to a maximum of 1,000 nits. The high-performance LEDs of the backlight have a half-life of 50,000 hours. This means the displays can be operated for more than 17 years, 8 hours a day with full brightness before it reaches half of its original brightness. This can be further extended by adjusting the backlight brightness via a PWM pin.

50-pin interface and optimal EMC characteristics

All required voltages of the display are generated directly on the FPC tail. The backlight driver has already been integrated too. Therefore, the provision of several voltages is a thing of the past. The selected FPC design saves the additional attaching of a board to the back of the display and avoids unnecessary thickening of the modules.

Unlike many other displays, the singular 50-pin interface provides enough ground lines to connect the display with low impedance to the body. An additional metal plate on the FPC back, a conductive coating as well as an intelligent line guidance also optimize EMC characteristics of the displays.

“Due to the simple interface of the panel and touch component, display sizes can be easily exchanged without changing other hardware. Therefore, based on the hardware platform, companies can offer a low-end and high-end version of the same product without much effort.”

The pin alignment and FPC position also make it possible to offer a suitable successor in the event of component termination. EDT has announced that production of the UI2 displays will continue for up to 3 years after the official end-of-life notification has been released. This gives machine and equipment builders plenty of time to implement a successor in the design of their devices.
